Blood Reincarnation (1974)A screaming example of those horror flicks that don't need that blood and gore routine a-la Evil Dead Trap to seriously freak your pants off. Blood Reincarnation is a three-story affair in Mandarin. The first story, The Treasure, tells of a man (Shih Tien) whose wife (Shirley Huang) gives birth to a demonic kid after the two of them top off Granny (who previously stole their bounty). It goes for 20 minutes and is nothing short of sheer terror. In the second, The Wanton, a young cheating couple (Yu Yang and Meng Li) receive severe retribution for throwing a box-bound hubby into the ocean. Punishment includes non-stop urinating and drowning at sea in a bathtub in the bedroom (that's way more scary than you'd think!). Lau Tin Sok is the third chapter, building to a wailing crescendo involving the incredible ‚ and honourable ‚ use of blood reincarnation on a doctor. This is the best horror flick I've ever seen from Hong Kong. You know it's good from the starting advice: "Charm can do nothing on ghost. You better believe it. The film is based on the Cantonese legend and asks people to do good deeds." The movie was re-released in 1991 on video, and I assume LD too, but sadly doesn't seem to be out these days. |
