Unfortunate Emil

Gorgeous
Directed by Vincent Kok
Starring Jackie Chan, Shu Kei, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Emil Chow, Richie Yen and prototype-Mitsubishi-loads of cameos.

Ditsy dreamer Bu (Shu) picks up a lovelorn message in a bottle washed up by her seaside KTV lounge in Taiwan. Reassured by a like-named acrobatic dolphin, she takes the bottle and its romantic note back to its source - HK make-up artist Albert (Leung). But Albert's none too thrilled by all this and, being extravagantly gay and all, he isn't swept up in his lovestruck new visitor. Luckily for her, she happens upon businessman CN (Chan) pulping some of corporate opponent LW's goons on a boat and she saves him in a borrowed speedboat. And the rest is romance, dotted with fights thrown in courtesy of CN's overly-competitive relationship with LW (Chow), and comedy pretty much everywhere.

Lovely romantic action comedy - plenty of laughs, lightweight direction, a touch of fantasy and quality acting. Not to mention less drawn-out fight scenes and more of Shu Kei. All the memorable scenes are spot gags (wait for the fan scene!) instead of mighty big stunts. There's no brutal enemy - just corporate manoeuvring and suave Emil Chow running a styrofoam business at odds with Chan's eco-friendly career. Fresh festive-season fun.
