Haunted Mansion (1998)

When a dead dog is found hanging (along with he who placed it) outside journalist GiGi's mother and sister's home, she and her cop husband move in for a few days for support. On arrival, they are informed by their local Fung Shui man that the house is facing the gateway to Hell. It's not safe to stick around, he says.

He's right. The sister and husband soon become possessed at the calling of Gigi's aborted daughter, and mum can't help due to her Parkinson's. Luckily, Gigi's editor comes to the rescue, helping to release mother's soul and free the husband from eternal mahjong. While all this is happening, estate agents are trying to seize the house and land. In Hong Kong, even the Gate to Hell is prime real estate.

Good, cheap horror.

DVD information: Not much to add to the above, except that the film is characterised by a lot of blue, both in daylight and night sequences and this is reflected on the disc. The picture's largely clean and very watchable. Standard English and Chinese (traditional and simplified) subtitles are available. The best feature is a very lengthy biography of Helena Law Lan, which is the best backgrounder on this actress that I've read. Biographies are available for her, Anthony Wong and Gigi Lai. Trailers for Haunted Mansion, Tricky King, The Demon's Baby (incredible teaser!), Temegotchi and F***/Off are included.
