Your Place or Mine (1998)A lighthearted sex/relationship comedy from James Yuen, about two ad-execs and their women. Creative director Wai (Leung) reminisces on his 'graveyard' of ex flames-cum-stars before stumbling into a tangle of new model Yu (Hsu) and his icy new boss, Vivian (Choi really getting into her few English lines). Meanwhile, grade-seven-earthquake-tit-wiggling-playboy Patrick (Fong) has a 'stand' a night, jilting two long-time loves in his wake. The style is reminiscent of a UFO production and the acting follows suit. Ada Choi looks great and acts, while Vivian Hsu plays a character named after, and perhaps similar to, herself (but without the back-catalogue). The men play it well, with nicely understated performances for a script equally so. Behind the camera, James Yuen does some delightful work. To my knowledge, it's his third film as director, after years of first-rate writing. His script here is no exception (especially after the blip that was Rumble Ages) and is another good reason why this film's worth watching. |
